It Gets Better

I know. I know. What took me so long to post something about the It Gets Better Project? I'm usually all up on the anti-homophobe-let's-stop-the-bullying-train.

Well all aboard. I'm in love with this project. It's a whole lotta videos from people and celebrities (as if they aren't people...) encouraging LGBTQ youth to not be overwhelmed by the bullying and that things do get better. The videos are so moving. I chose Allison Weiss' to share with you since she's from Athens and pretty much rocks, but there are tons others and I beg you to check them out.

I've said many times on this little platform that bullying isn't cool, and especially bullying children enough to the point of suicide is just unacceptable. Period. And anyone who tolerates that or perpetuates that cycle is... i don't know... crazy.

And please check out this mom who is sticking up for her little boy who wanted to dress like Daphne from Scooby Doo for Halloween. So freaking precious. She writes:

"If you think that me allowing my son to be a female character for Halloween is somehow going to ‘make’ him gay then you are an idiot. Firstly, what a ridiculous concept. Secondly, if my son is gay, OK. I will love him no less. Thirdly, I am not worried that your son will grow up to be an actual ninja so back off.

If my daughter had dressed as Batman, no one would have thought twice about it. No one."

Love it.

I'm not one for singing the praises of internet and social media devices, but I'm going to today. I think blogs and initiatives like the It Gets Better Project are great ways for kids, and adults, who are struggling with being gay know there are other people out there like them, even if they feel like no one else in their community has been through the same thing.

So follow Allison's lead and go love the shit out of someone and high five them for being awesome.
