let the good weeks continue! I'm just really enjoying Athens during the summer and am loving having a little bit of free time! Wishing more people were in town to enjoy it with though...

my mom was right, part of the goodness came from a good weekend at home full of scrabble playing (my mom used the word zephyr, i thought that was pretty BA of her), a visit to the goat farm and lots of kisses from the kids, my first 5k where i got a t-shirt that glows in the dark, the new regina spektor cd came out and I'm in love with it, stephanie has invited me over twice for fresh and hot-out-the-oven peach cobbler, and as of five minutes ago I officially got my first mosquito bite of the summer. I know you're questioning the goodness of the mosquito bites...

Today is Friday which means I get another basket of fresh veggies from the CSA. There is lots of great stuff like cucumber, corn, arugula, pole beans, squash, kale, carrots, turnips, cabbage, basil, and sage.

My favorite for the week is this adorable little lemon cucumber!

Unfortunately the two people I share it with are out of town, leaving me with an entire basket (enough to feed four people or a small army) to myself. I literally don't know what to do with all of this food. I am drowning in it. My refrigerator is overflowing, as is my freezer! It might eat me before I get a chance to eat it. Okay, you should get the picture by now.

I am in the process of starting a chapter of Friends of the World Food Program in Athens. The World Food Program is a program of the United Nations dedicated to ending world hunger. Also, the WFP is the only program that doesn't receive a budget from the UN which means they have to rely totally on donations from countries, organizations, and individuals. I mentioned before the staggering statistics of hunger, but as of this week the number officially increased to ONE BILLION. That means 1 in 6 people are hungry.

Andy Stanley is a really popular pastor in GA. He has some pretty good stuff to say. My friend Rebecca frequently mentions one of his sermons on first world problems like oh gas is too expensive, when something like 1 in 8 people in the world have cars. I am really struggling with my first world problem of having too much food. How is it possible that my refrigerator is beyond capacity when 25,000 people die every day as a result of hunger? How? I'm yearning for an answer to this question... For the past two hours I've been dwelling on this and making tons of invitations for people to come eat at my house or just to go grocery shopping in my fridge! I'm showing these pictures because I'm actually saddened by how much food is in my two-person apartment. Is that possible?

A new bill was introduced to Congress this week-The Roadmap to End Global Hunger and Promote Food Security Act of 2009. So far 12 of 535 members of Congress are supporting it. Please call your Senator or Representative to ask them to sponsor this bill!! If you don't know who your people are you can go to www.senate.gov and www.house.gov to figure it out just by typing in your zip code. Once you do, call 866-569-FOOD ask to speak to Rep. or Sen. so-and-so and tell them that you are a constituent from _____ and you want them to support this legislation. It will take maybe 4 minutes total.

On another note, I read this little piece on faith today and really enjoyed it. Check it out.
